10 Tips to Get Your Pup Fall-Ready

10 Tips to Get Your Pup Fall-Ready

September is the perfect time for a reset after a busy summer.  Vacay season is over, the kids are back at school, and fall adventures are calling.  We’ve put together our top tail-wagging tips to keep your pup happy and healthy as the season shifts. Now who’s ready for a pupkin-spiced latte?!

1. Adjust calorie intake if needed

Consider your pup's activity levels in the fall; perhaps they are more active in the cooler weather, or the shorter days may mean more sofa snuggles and fewer outdoor adventures. Keep an eye on their portion sizes and tweak mealtimes accordingly to maintain a healthy weight.

Why not add some delicious and nutritious seasonal pup-friendly superfoods to their bowl?  Such as sweet potato, apples and plain pumpkin, which is great for digestion (just skip the pumpkin pie and spiced, sweet treats.)

2. Seasonal health checks

Fall is a great time to schedule your pup’s annual vet exam, check dental care and vaccinations are up to date, and also keep an eye on any health conditions that may flare up in the cooler weather, such as arthritis or joint stiffness.

3. Keep fending off fleas and ticks

Sadly, cooler weather doesn't mean bug-free. Ticks thrive in the fall as they seek out hosts before the cold weather sets in. Keep flea and tick prevention a top priority and do a quick tick-check after outdoor activities like woodland hikes to keep pups healthy.

4. Watch out for seasonal hazards

Keep an eye out for seasonal hazards such as toxic fall plants (chrysanthemums, autumn crocus), poisonous wild mushrooms that appear in damp weather, and fallen acorns and buckeyes, which can cause tummy trouble. Those crunchy leaf piles might look super fun and inviting, but beware of hidden sharp sticks, mould and pesky ticks.

It’s also never too early to start thinking ahead to Halloween, but spooky fun can spell trouble for our pups! From tempting candy, which can be toxic to pets, to dress-up dangers and risky, porch-pleasing displays. Keep your pup’s safety in mind as you start to plan spooky festivities.

5. Allergy awareness

Just like us, dogs can react to ragweed, mold spores, and dust. Watch out for signs of discomfort such as excessive scratching, licking, or sneezing. If your pup seems to be affected by seasonal allergens, consult your veterinarian team.

6. Fit & fetching

Our pups need regular physical and mental activity to stay healthy. As the leaves start to turn, it’s a great time of year to get outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Take advantage of cooler days for longer walks and outdoor games - fall is also prime hiking season for dogs.

Weather not playing ball? Don’t let rainy days ruin the fun.  Keep your dog stimulated with puzzle toys, hide-and-seek games, or a quick indoor training session to burn off energy and banish boredom.

7. Protect those paws

As the crisp air sets in, it’s time to start thinking about protecting those paws for the cooler months ahead.  Fallen leaves, cold temperatures and damp, muddy ground can be tough on their sensitive paw pads. Regularly check for signs of irritation, especially after long walks on rough terrain and cold surfaces. Wipe your dog's paws after walks and consider applying a soothing paw balm if they tend to get dry or cracked. Don’t forget to give those nails a quick trim and paw hair a tidy too for the new season ahead.

8. Brush out that summer coat

Your dog’s coat often starts to shed as the seasons change. Help the process by keeping on top of grooming appointments and brushing out that summer coat to let your pup’s thicker, warmer fall coat come through. Regularly grooming also means the bonus of less loose hair on your favorite sweater, too.

9. Gear up for the season

Now is the perfect time to check the condition of your pup’s harness and leash for any damage and replace them if needed.  It’s also a great time to think about investing in cold-weather gear, such as a lightweight jacket for short-haired or senior pups, cozy bedding for your pup to curl up in or maybe some reflective gear for those darker walks.

10. Fall is for bonding

Finally, fall is all about slowing down, cozying up and making memories with our pups, from zoomies through crunchy leaves to pumpkin-powered adventures, to extra snuggle sessions. Your pup will love every moment spent with you.
