1. What about bacteria…Is raw feeding safe?
Raw feeding is safe when meat is sourced, prepared, and stored correctly. Practice good hygiene and handle your pet's meals as you would your own to prevent bacteria. Follow defrosting guidelines and always wash your hands before and after handling your pet’s food. Clean and sanitise all surfaces and utensils after each use. Remember, your pup’s immune and digestive systems are designed for a natural, raw diet.
2. What do dogs actually eat on a raw diet?
A raw diet is exactly what it sounds like: feeding your dog raw ingredients. A raw diet consists of raw meat, organs, and bones, and sometimes fruit and vegetables, to mimic what dogs would naturally eat in the wild. It's best suited to their nutritional needs and easiest for them to digest.
To help you provide a balanced diet, we recommend the 80/10/10 rule: aim for 70-80% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bones, 10% organ meat (half liver, half other secreting organs), with optional whole vegetables and fruit.
3. How much should I be feeding?
The daily amount of raw food your dog needs is, on average, around 2-3% of their ideal adult weight. Every dog is different, so always take into account their metabolism, activity level, any medical conditions and age. Keep an eye out for any weight changes to help determine if you are feeding the right amount. You want to aim for your pup to have an hourglass figure, but no hips or rib bones should be showing – you should be able to feel the ribs but not see them clearly. Keep in mind, snacks and treats count towards daily intake!

4. What about bones? Aren't they dangerous?
Bones are only safe if you feed them raw, as they are softer, more flexible, less likely to splinter, and easier to digest. Bones are packed with nutritional benefits and make a great addition to your dog's diet. Pick the right bone for your pup, consider any health conditions, your dog’s chewing style, and choose the right size (big enough so they can’t swallow it whole). Avoid weight-bearing bones, buy from a trusted source, and always supervise your dog when giving bones.

We always recommend feeding your dog a balanced diet, complete with everything they need to thrive, made up of nutritious, high-quality ingredients. There are two main approaches to raw feeding:
-
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) Model - contains muscle meat, offal (organs), raw bone, fresh vegetables and fruit, and sometimes seeds/nuts.
-
Prey Model Raw (PMR)- The PMR diet feeds whole prey where appropriate, or a combination of muscle meat, organs, and raw bones in ratios that mimic whole prey. This model does not include plant ingredients.
6. Is my dog too young / too old to feed raw?
Dogs of any age can switch to raw; just adjust as needed for age. For example, puppies need specific nutrients and patterns for growth. It's never too late to reap the benefits of a natural, species-appropriate diet. Senior dogs will benefit from a raw diet and can experience enhanced health and vitality, even in their golden years.

Raw diets may cost more, but your dog’s nutrition is a long-term investment, not just an expense. At Top Dog, we are committed to keeping our high-quality products as affordable and accessible as possible with wholesale prices. Ultra-processed food, such as kibble, might seem cheaper and more convenient, but a natural, raw diet pays off in better health and well-being, fewer vet visits, and a happier dog overall, and that is priceless.
8. How do I transition my dog onto raw?
We recommend transitioning your pup slowly by mixing your dog’s current food with raw food and gradually increasing this over a 1-2 week period. We also advise sticking to simple meals to begin with, such as lean white protein, and avoiding adding too many new ingredients during the transition time. Switching your dog to raw is exciting, but remember to go slow and let them adjust at their own pace.
Our Top Dog starter pack is perfect for beginning your raw journey.
9. Will my dog get sick / have side effects when switching to raw?
Every pup is different, and most transition to raw without issues, especially when done gradually. There are some common, temporary side effects, but these are mostly mild and usually settle quickly as the body adjusts. Some dogs may experience the following:
-
Digestive upset - some dogs experience softer stools or mild diarrhoea as the gut adjusts, but this then changes to firmer, smaller stools (typical of raw-fed pups).
-
Changes in energy - some dogs might seem a little lethargic at first or get an energy boost as they adjust.
-
Mild detox symptoms - some owners report changes to skin, stools and odour.
-
Change in water intake - you might also notice your pup is drinking less on a raw diet. This is because they are naturally getting moisture and hydration from their diet now.
Remember, if you have any concerns or your dog experiences severe or prolonged symptoms after switching to raw, seek medical advice from your veterinarian team.
