Switching your dog to a raw diet can feel like a big leap, but it doesn’t have to be overly complicated or confusing, and it's one of the single most impactful things you can do for your pup's health and vitality.
Our 3-step guide has been created to help you go from feeling like a nervous beginner to a confident, empowered raw feeder in as little as 7 days. We'll cover exactly what to buy, how to serve the first meal, and what to expect in the first week of making the switch. Let's break it down so your pup can thrive.
Step 1: Prepare and Purchase
You’ve done the research, and you are ready to go raw, but how do you actually start? It can be tempting to try too much too soon, but the key is to keep things simple and go at your own and your dog's pace.
We always advise purchasing raw food from a high-quality, reputable source. For your first week, we recommend introducing a complete, balanced, easily digestible single-protein blend, such as our Chicken or Turkey Healthy Variety Mix. These nutritious recipes include the right balance of meat, organs, and bones, taking all the guesswork out. Or try our popular Starter Pack, which includes some of our favourite Healthy Variety blends. You'll also want a dedicated stainless steel bowl for easy cleaning, as well as a clear space in your fridge or freezer.
Step 2: Serve the First Meal
Now for the fun part - feeding your first raw meal. There are several approaches to transitioning your pup to raw. We would suggest a gradual approach. Start by mixing 25% raw with 75% of their current food, then gradually increase the amount of raw over several days until it makes up 100% of their meal. As always, pay attention to your dog’s body and be guided by how they are adjusting.
Remember to always keep raw food frozen until it’s ready to use. Thaw the food safely in the refrigerator overnight and then serve. Make sure to follow good hygiene practices, wash hands thoroughly after handling raw meat and sanitise utensils and work surfaces to avoid cross-contamination.
When it's time to eat, portion it out. A good starting point is 2-3 per cent of your dog's ideal adult body weight per day, split into two meals. Check out our feeding guide for more information on portion sizes by weight. Put the food in their new bowl and place it on the floor. Step back and watch the magic happen. Most dogs need zero convincing when it comes to their first raw meal.
Step 3: Observe and Adjust
The first week is all about observation. Your dog's body is adjusting to a brand new, highly digestible food, and it’s common for your pup to experience some minor, temporary side effects. The biggest change you'll notice is in their poop. Yes, we have to talk about poop.
You may see some initial digestive upset or a "detox poop" as their system adjusts. This is normal. Within a few days, you should start seeing the famous "raw poop": smaller, firmer, and far less smelly. You might also notice your dog drinking less water; this is because their new food is much more moisture-rich. Don't panic. These are all signs that the diet is working. Just ensure fresh water is always available.
Pay attention to positive changes. You should notice more mealtime excitement and start to see health benefits in just 7 days. If something feels off or your dog is experiencing severe or prolonged side effects, speak to your veterinarian team for advice.
