Did you know that raw eggs are a cracking source of protein, vitamins and minerals for your pup? This Easter, we asked our Certified, Professional, Canine Nutritionist, Katie Coach, to share some of the egg-cellent benefits of this superfood.
"Eggs are a fantastic source of nutrition for dogs, as they are one of the most complete sources of amino acids (the building blocks of protein). If you think about it, they contain everything a chick needs to hatch & grow into a chicken!
Eggs are a great way to add a high-quality protein boost to your pup's meals. They provide fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals to help support skin and coat health, muscle development, joint function, immune function, and overall health. I always recommend opting for organic, pasture-raised eggs when possible—a healthy egg comes from a healthy chicken."
Egg membrane
One of my favorite, secret powerhouse additions is the egg membrane, the thin layer right inside the shell. It is great for joint health as it contains collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid. I like to peel it out of the shell and add it to my dog's bowl.
Eggshells
They are a great source of calcium, collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin to support joint and bone health. I always opt for eggs from my local farm, so they are not sprayed with chemicals.Â
Egg yolkÂ
Egg yolk is loaded with high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and glossy coats, packed with nutrients like Vitamin A, which is crucial for eye health and immunity, and Vitamin B12, which aids red blood cell production and supports the nervous system.
Egg whitesÂ
They are a nutrient-dense, lean protein source that supports healthy muscle development, boosts energy, and supports weight management. They're also a good source of selenium, sodium, and potassium.
Top Tips for Feeding Raw Eggs
Eggs can be a great addition to a natural, raw diet and provide essential nutrients for your pup's health and well-being. We recommend feeding them in moderation as part of a balanced raw diet or serving them as a tasty topper or protein-boosting treat.Â
- Choose good-quality, fresh eggs from a reputable source.
- Opt for free-range, organic, where possible.
- Always ensure the eggs you serve your dog are clean and stored hygienically, in a covered container in the refrigerator.Â
- Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw eggs.
- Inspect for any damage and discard any eggs that are cracked or dirty.
- If you are feeding your dog raw eggs for the first time, start with a small amount and see how they tolerate them.
- The number of raw eggs you can feed your dog depends on their size, age and overall health. Consult your veterinarian team for specific advice for your dog. Â
